Robert Swan is the first man to walk to both the North and South Poles, and has since engaged in polar trash removal efforts, international youth education in Antarctica, and other polar initiatives. His current 5-year lecture and sailing expedition is to promote clean technology, alternate transportation fuels, and to raise awareness about environmental threats to the marine environment. He will discuss the mission of this trip, where he has been so far, modifications to his boat (which include plastic recycled sails, a biofuel engine, and non-toxic coatings), and the work of his group Mission Antarctica.

Since the 1970s, naturally occurring frozen methane hydrate has been recognized in oceanic sediments along the edges of continents around the globe. Learn how renowned geochemist Miriam Kastner is studying these enormous methane reservoirs and why she is striving to understand their potential impact on global warming and on the stability of sediments along vast stretches of the world's continental margins.
