How to Apply

The Application period for Fall 2008 is closed.  The Fall 2009 application will be available in September.

The following documents are required:

1. Statement of Purpose (submitted with electronic application)
2. Official transcripts of all college-level work mailed directly to the Department
3. Three letters of recommendation, submitted via electronic application process (preferred), or mailed directly to the Department by the recommender
4. Checklist of courses (for applicants to Biological Oceanography and Marine Biology)
5. Graduate Record Examination (GRE), general test score report,
6. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Biology or Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology subject test score (required of applicants to the Marine Biology specialization)
7. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report*
8. Application fee

The GRE and TOEFL examinations must be taken no later than November in order for the scores to arrive before the application deadline.

Report GRE scores to:

Department Code 0599, 0508, or 0211
Test scores are valid for five years after the exam date

Report TOEFL scores to:

Institution Code 4836 (UC San Diego)
Department Code 75
TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the exam date

Incomplete files are considered only if space is available.

LATE APPLICATIONS ARE GENERALLY NOT ACCEPTED. Exceptions for special circumstances will be considered by petition.

All international applicants whose native language is not English and whose undergraduate education was conducted in a language other than English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language and submit their official test scores to the Office of Graduate Admissions. Arrangements for taking the TOEFL may be made through the nearest United States Embassy or by writing to the Educational Testing Service, Box 899, Princeton, New Jersey 08541, or at http://www.toefl.com .
